A city of artists and art lovers
Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart is still present in many places within the city of Salzburg. Evidence of the life and works of the ‘Wunderkind’ is omnipresent in the town of his birth. It’s difficult not to find traces of Mozart’s life in the old part of Salzburg, whether on a visit to the place of his birth, to his second home or on the town square that now bears his name.
Prominent figures, including great composers, authors, singers, gallery owners or conductors, have left their mark on the city. Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, Michael Haydn, Georg Trakl, Thomas Bernhard, Stefan Zweig, Arturo Toscanini, Hugo von Hofmannsthal, Maria von Trapp, Herbert von Karajan, Peter Handke and Gerard Mortier – to name but a few – significantly influenced the city’s cultural development.
No visit is complete without a stroll through the city’s fabulous art galleries, an evening at the theater, a concert or dance performance. Don’t even think about trying to resist the powerful cultural temptations the city has to offer. You would be missing out on a very enjoyable experience!
Salzburg Christmas market: one of the most beautiful Advent markets in the world
Several Krampus and Perchten runs will take place in the city and province of Salzburg at the beginning of December. These evil spirits accompany St. Nicholas and have been known to “punish” naughty children. A stroll through one of Salzburg’s Christmas markets is an absolute must. The historic Salzburg Christmas Market on Cathedral Square and Residence Square has been held since the end of the 15th century – making it not only one of the most beautiful but also one of the oldest Christmas markets in Europe. The “Advent Magic” Christmas market in Hellbrunn is especially romantic and charming, using the magnificent Hellbrunn Palace as a backdrop. Many smaller Advent markets can be found on Mirabell Square, at St. Peter’s Monastery or at Hohensalzburg Fortress. Although each market is unique, they all have one thing in common: they are well worth the visit.
